In March, we had the pleasure of welcoming Andrew Shiao, a Concordia alumnus (C'11), who shared his journey through the world of mechanical engineering.

Andrew's path is nothing short of inspiring. After graduating from Concordia, he furthered his studies at Northwestern University, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. His college experience included invaluable internships at Boeing, where he worked in St. Louis and Seattle on the F-18 program and structural analysis for the 777X wing. The passion he developed during this time is palpable and serves as a reminder of the opportunities out there for our future engineers.

In his current role at Shure in Chicago, Andrew has taken on exciting challenges as a mechanical engineer. He has led the design of innovative electromechanical products, such as Bluetooth earphones and microphones, balancing the intricate needs of durability, manufacturability, user experience, and cost. His commitment to crafting quality products shines through, and it’s clear he loves what he does.

During Andrew's talk, he generously shared not just his experiences but also essential advice for those looking to forge their own paths in engineering. He offered tips on navigating the challenges of engineering school and discussed various career paths, giving insights that can be both motivating and practical in today’s competitive landscape.

Andrew also highlighted how AI is reshaping the field of mechanical engineering, opening doors to new possibilities we never thought possible.

With a humble yet confident presence, Andrew reminded us all that success is not just about degrees and titles, but also about passion, hard work, and the willingness to learn and adapt. His insights resonated deeply, leaving us inspired and well-equipped to navigate our own journeys in the exciting world of engineering.

Thank you, Andrew, for sharing your story and wisdom with us!
